The five patterns

Every finding NavSignal surfaces is one of five patterns. They are the product's whole taxonomy: instead of a list of unconnected page-level facts, every issue on the map is one of these five, each with its own shape, cause, and fix.

Issue pattern

Buried Page

High-traffic entry point with a poor internal path to conversion. Users land, then have nowhere to go.

On the map
A busy entry node with almost nothing flowing out of it.
What causes it
The page is doing its job as an entry point, real visitors are landing on it, but there is nowhere obvious for them to go next. Thin navigation, a missing next step, or a page that reads as a dead end all produce it.
What fixing it usually looks like
Give the page a clear next step: internal links or a CTA into the pages downstream that actually convert, so the traffic it already earns has somewhere useful to go.
Issue pattern

Ranking Opportunity

High impressions, low CTR. The page shows up in search but the title or meta does not earn the click.

On the map
A node ranking well but barely clicked, starving everything downstream.
What causes it
The page already ranks well enough to show up often, but the title and meta description in the search result do not make the case for clicking it over the page next to it.
What fixing it usually looks like
Rewrite the title tag and meta description to match what the searcher is actually looking for. The ranking is already earned; the fix is making the listing worth clicking.
Issue pattern

Engagement Drain

Informational page ranking for transactional queries, or the reverse. The intent mismatch kills engagement.

On the map
Traffic arrives, then leaves. The path dead-ends.
What causes it
The query someone searched and the page they land on do not match in intent, for example an informational page ranking for a query someone meant transactionally, or the reverse. Visitors bail because the page is not what they expected.
What fixing it usually looks like
Realign the page to the intent behind the query, either by rewriting the content to answer what searchers expect, or by pointing that traffic to a different page that already does.
Issue pattern

Orphan Page

High-converting page with almost no internal links pointing to it. Invisible to visitors navigating the site.

On the map
A converting node floating off on its own, nothing pointing in.
What causes it
No other page on the site links to it. Search or a direct link is the only way in, so most visitors never find it even though the page itself converts well when they do.
What fixing it usually looks like
Add internal links to the page from relevant existing content or navigation, so it is reachable by browsing the site instead of only by search.
Issue pattern

Keyword Cannibalization

Two or more pages split authority on the same query, so neither ranks as well as one consolidated page would.

On the map
Two nodes fighting over the same query, splitting the flow.
What causes it
Two or more pages independently target the same query. Search engines have to pick one to rank, splitting the authority and demand that a single consolidated page would otherwise capture.
What fixing it usually looks like
Consolidate the competing pages into one, or clearly differentiate them and canonicalize or redirect so only one is left competing for the query.
